1. Expressway

An expressway is a road intended to carry through traffic efficiently, usually at higher speeds than ordinary roads. Expressways often have limited access, multiple lanes, separated carriageways or grade-separated junctions, but their design and legal status vary between countries.

An expressway is not always a motorway. It may have intersections, traffic lights or direct access, and the permitted road users, speed limits and special rules depend on local signs and regulations.

How do people refer to an expressway in Norway?

Norwegian law uses motortrafikkveg for this road category. It is a road for motor traffic, separate from a motorway.

English • Traffic sign 503 • Expressway. Expressway traffic rules apply from this sign until 505 ‘End of expressway’, 502 ‘Motorway’, or the junction between an expressway exit road and a road that is not an expressway.

What speed limit applies to cars on an expressway in Norway?

Follow the posted limit. The road-for-motor-traffic designation does not itself permit 110 km/h; different sections have different limits. The ordinary default outside built-up areas is 80 km/h unless otherwise signed.

Who may use an expressway in Norway?

Normally, only motor vehicles or combinations that may legally travel at at least 40 km/h on a level road are admitted. Mopeds are prohibited. This does not require maintaining 40 km/h when traffic or safety requires less.

Can I stop on an expressway in Norway?

Stopping for an ordinary break is prohibited on a motortrafikkveg and its entry and exit roads. Use a designated rest or parking facility instead, and follow police directions.
