1. Separated path

A separated path is a path or part of a road where different categories of road users, typically pedestrians and cyclists, are assigned separate sections of the same overall route. The sections may be distinguished by road markings, different paving materials, a kerb or another physical separation.

Users should remain within the part of the path intended for them and take particular care where the sections cross, merge or connect with roads. The permitted users, priority rules and any speed restrictions depend on the local traffic signs and regulations.

What is Romania’s sign name for separately allocated walking and cycling sections?

The official government road-education guide calls the divided sign delimitarea pistelor pentru biciclete și pentru pietoni. A vertical line separates the bicycle and pedestrian symbols and shows the respective parts of the route. Follow the part assigned to your group.

Can Romanian cyclists use the walking part beside a signed cycle route?

An ordinary pavement is not a general cycling route. The Regulations prohibit pavement cycling except where a cycling facility is provided there. Use the designated cycling space; its presence does not open the rest of the pavement to riding.

How does Romania distinguish a divided route from a shared walking and cycling path?

The shared version is a pistă comună pentru pietoni și biciclete, without the vertical allocation between symbols. The divided sign identifies separate walking and cycling sections. Follow the arrangement indicated at that location.
