1. Shared-use path

A shared-use path is a path or part of a road intended for use by both pedestrians and cyclists. Unlike facilities where pedestrians and cyclists have clearly separated sections, users of a shared-use path normally travel within the same general space.

Because users may travel at very different speeds, cyclists should approach pedestrians carefully, adapt their speed and leave sufficient space when passing. The permitted users, priority rules and any speed restrictions depend on the local traffic signs and regulations.

What does Romania call a shared walking and cycling path?

The official sign name is pistă comună pentru pietoni și biciclete. It combines the pedestrian and bicycle symbols for a shared facility. Check the actual sign rather than treating every path beside a pavement as a combined route.

How do Romanian signs distinguish a shared path from divided walking and cycling sections?

The shared-path sign places the pedestrian and bicycle symbols together without a dividing line. The signs delimiting separate walking and cycling sections show their allocation. On a divided route, follow the part assigned to your group.

Does a Romanian shared-path sign permit riding on every nearby pavement?

No. The cycling rule prohibits pavement riding unless a cycling facility has been provided there. Use the designated facility, not the entire adjoining walking surface. Shared-path permission is attached to the actual route and its controls.
