1. Eis
Do you have to reduce your speed on icy roads in Belgium?
Yes. Belgian traffic rules require drivers to adapt their speed to the road, weather and visibility conditions. The posted speed limit may therefore be too fast when the road is icy.
Are winter tyres mandatory in Belgium when roads are icy?
No. Winter tyres are not generally mandatory in Belgium, although they can provide better grip in cold, snowy and icy conditions.
When may snow chains be used on icy roads in Belgium?
Snow chains may be fitted only when there is snow or ice on the road. They may not be used on normal clear road surfaces.
Are studded tyres allowed in Belgium?
Studded tyres are prohibited in principle. Their use may exceptionally be authorised when weather conditions justify it and under specific conditions.
What should you do if you encounter black ice in Belgium?
Reduce your speed and avoid sudden acceleration, steering or braking. Belgian rules require drivers to adapt their driving to the condition of the road, including slippery conditions caused by ice.
Are there special Belgian traffic signs warning about ice?
A warning sign for a slippery road may be used where there is a particular risk of loss of grip. An additional panel can indicate the specific danger, such as ice or snow, depending on the applicable signage.
