Separated pathBrussels
1. Separated path
A separated path is a path or part of a road where different categories of road users, typically pedestrians and cyclists, are assigned separate sections of the same overall route. The sections may be distinguished by road markings, different paving materials, a kerb or another physical separation.
Users should remain within the part of the path intended for them and take particular care where the sections cross, merge or connect with roads. The permitted users, priority rules and any speed restrictions depend on the local traffic signs and regulations.
Which Belgian sign indicates a separated pedestrian and cycle path?
The Belgian D9 sign indicates a part of the public road reserved for pedestrians, bicycles and two-wheeled class A mopeds, with pedestrians separated from the other permitted users.

Can speed pedelecs use a signposted separated pedestrian and cycle path in Belgium?
Yes, subject to the speed, direction and supplementary-sign rules. On a usable D9 cycling part signed in their direction, speed-pedelec riders may choose whether to use it where the road limit is 50 km/h or less, provided they do not endanger other users; above 50 km/h they must use it. Supplementary signs can require or prohibit use. This permission does not extend to an undivided D10 pedestrian-and-cycle path.

Do pedestrians and cyclists automatically have priority where a separated path crosses a road in Belgium?
No. A separated pedestrian and cycle path sign does not itself establish priority at every crossing. Users must follow the applicable priority signs, traffic lights and crossing rules.
