Residential areaChina
4. Residential area
A residential area is a street or group of streets where housing and access to local properties are the main functions. Drivers should expect pedestrians, cyclists, children, parked vehicles and vehicles entering or leaving driveways.
Some countries identify particular residential areas with traffic signs and apply special low-speed and residential-area rules. The speed limit, pedestrian rights, parking rules and permitted road users therefore depend on local signs and regulations.

What speed limit applies in a residential area in China?
In residential areas and premises, drive a motor vehicle at low speed and follow any speed-limit sign. The national residential-area provision does not set one universal numerical limit; ordinary public-road defaults depend on the road layout.

What rights do pedestrians have in a residential area in China?
Drivers of motor vehicles must give way to pedestrians in residential areas and premises. This duty is stated directly in the national implementing regulations, rather than depending on a foreign residential-area sign.

Where may I park in a residential area in China?
Park a motor vehicle in a designated parking place and obey local signs. Pavement parking is prohibited except in lawfully marked parking bays. Temporary roadside stops must not obstruct vehicles or pedestrians; national stopping bans, including pedestrian crossings, still apply. Stop close to the right-hand side, remain with the vehicle and leave promptly after passengers board or alight or goods are loaded or unloaded. Open doors only when stopped and without obstructing other road users.
