1. Expressway
An expressway is a road intended to carry through traffic efficiently, usually at higher speeds than ordinary roads. Expressways often have limited access, multiple lanes, separated carriageways or grade-separated junctions, but their design and legal status vary between countries.
An expressway is not always a motorway. It may have intersections, traffic lights or direct access, and the permitted road users, speed limits and special rules depend on local signs and regulations.
How do people refer to an expressway in Czechia?
The official Czech term is silnice pro motorová vozidla, meaning road for motor vehicles. It is separate from the motorway category.

What speed limit applies to cars on an expressway in Czechia?
For an ordinary car in Czechia, the general maximum on a road for motor vehicles is 110 km/h outside built-up areas and 80 km/h within them. On a road without directionally separated carriageways, the limit must be reduced by local traffic regulation to no more than 90 km/h. Follow the actual signs, any authorised increase on a separated road, and lower vehicle-specific or temporary restrictions.
