1. Tunnel
A tunnel is a covered passage that carries a road through or beneath an obstacle such as a hill, mountain, building, waterway or another transport route. Road tunnels may contain one or more traffic lanes and can carry traffic in one or both directions.
Driving in a tunnel requires particular attention because visibility, available escape routes and space for avoiding hazards are limited. Drivers should follow the applicable lighting, speed, lane and following-distance rules and pay attention to emergency exits, traffic signals and variable-message signs.
What should I check before entering a tunnel in Czechia?
Use the required vehicle lights and read the entrance and lane controls. Czech law treats tunnel driving as reduced-visibility driving; daytime running lights alone should not be relied on for that condition.

Does a tunnel sign in Czechia set a universal speed limit?
No single speed can be read from the tunnel pictogram. Apply the road’s relevant limit and any permanent or electronic speed restriction, and drive more slowly when visibility, queues or another hazard require it.

English • Traffic sign IZ 3a • Tunnel. The sign marks the entrance to a tunnel where special tunnel traffic rules apply in addition to the general road traffic rules. For tunnels longer than 500 m, the actual length is shown in the lower part of the sign or on a supplementary plate. For tunnels longer than 3 000 m, the remaining length is shown every 1000 m.
Čeština • Dopravní značka IZ 3a • Tunel. Značka označuje vjezd do tunelu, kde kromě obecných pravidel provozu na pozemních komunikacích platí zvláštní pravidla pro provoz v tunelu. U tunelů delších než 500 m se ve spodní části značky nebo na dodatkové tabulce uvede jejich skutečná délka. U tunelů delších než 3 000 m se zbývající délka tunelu uvádí každých 1000 m.

Is every tunnel in Czechia open to pedestrians and cyclists?
No. Check the road category and access signs before entering. A motorway tunnel, a vehicle-restricted tunnel and a purpose-built walking or cycling underpass have different access arrangements. Emergency evacuation routes do not establish ordinary public access.
