1. Bike path

A bike path is a part of a road or a separate route intended primarily or exclusively for people riding bicycles. It may be physically separated from motor traffic, marked on the road surface or identified by traffic signs.

Bike paths may be one-way, two-way or shared with other road users. The permitted users, direction of travel, priority rules and obligation to use the path depend on local traffic signs and regulations.

What does Finland call a cycle path?

The official term is pyörätie. Its blue circular bicycle sign identifies a path cyclists must use, subject to the legal exceptions. A sign showing both walking and cycling identifies a combined or divided facility instead.

Mandatory path for cyclists. Mandatory path for cyclists.

English • Traffic sign D5 • Cycle path. Cyclists travelling in the relevant direction must use it. Mopeds are permitted if a text plate states ‘Permitted for mopeds’. H23.2 or H9.1 indicates a two-way path. If a two-way path exists only on the left and the right shoulder or carriageway edge is safer because of the route or a similar reason, cyclists may use that shoulder or edge. The Act's carriageway rules apply on the path. Placed on the right or above it; exceptionally may stand solely on the left.

Suomi • Liikennemerkki D5 • Pyörätie. Merkillä osoitetaan pyörätie, jota polkupyöräilijän on käytettävä ajaessaan asianomaiseen suuntaan.

Must I cross to a Finnish cycle path that lies only on the left?

Normally use the designated path. However, where a two-way path is only on the left, the Act permits using the right-hand verge or carriageway edge when that is safer because of your route or a comparable reason. Assess the actual circumstances.

Does a Finnish cycle-path sign automatically permit mopeds?

No. Mopeds may use the cycle path only where a supplementary plate permits them. A bicycle symbol alone is insufficient. Check both the main sign and any additional plate before entering with a moped.
