1. Bike path

A bike path is a part of a road or a separate route intended primarily or exclusively for people riding bicycles. It may be physically separated from motor traffic, marked on the road surface or identified by traffic signs.

Bike paths may be one-way, two-way or shared with other road users. The permitted users, direction of travel, priority rules and obligation to use the path depend on local traffic signs and regulations.

What does Panama’s official road education call a cycling route?

Decree 206/2021 defines ciclovía as a road or carriageway section used occasionally by bicycles and other non-motorised mobility, and cicloruta as space reserved exclusively for those users. Read the actual designation and controls. These definitions do not open every pavement to cycling: municipal authorisation is required for shared use of pedestrian space.

Does a Panamanian cycling route remove the bicycle helmet requirement?

No. The Traffic Regulations require bicycle riders to wear a protective helmet. A designated cycling route is not an exemption from that requirement. Keep the helmet fastened and follow any traffic controls where the route meets a road.

May a cyclist hold onto a moving vehicle when leaving a Panamanian cycling route?

No. The Regulations prohibit bicycle riders from holding onto another moving vehicle. Riders must remain properly seated and in control of the bicycle. Rejoining the road from a cycling route does not create an exception to these requirements.
