1. Elderly
Elderly refers to older people, particularly those who may experience age-related changes in mobility, vision, hearing or reaction time. In road traffic, elderly people may participate as drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists or users of mobility aids.
Road users should allow older people sufficient time and space to move safely, particularly at pedestrian crossings, parking areas and other locations where they may interact closely with vehicles.
Are elderly people a separate category of road user?
Older people still participate as drivers, passengers, pedestrians or cyclists. Age can affect medical or licensing requirements and the care others should take, so the road-user role does not remove age-related protections or conditions.

How should drivers behave around elderly pedestrians?
Drivers should remain patient, allow sufficient time and be prepared to slow down or stop when an older pedestrian is crossing or approaching the roadway.
