The driving-licence system in Sweden
Which authorities share responsibility for Swedish driving licences?
The Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) handles permits, licence issue, renewals and withdrawals, while the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) conducts theory and practical tests.
Is a Swedish driving licence valid throughout Sweden?
Yes. A valid Swedish licence is recognised nationwide, subject to its categories, conditions and current legal status.
Is a Swedish licence recognised elsewhere in Europe?
Yes. A valid Swedish EU-format licence is generally recognised throughout the EU and EEA.
Can one person hold two EEA driving licences?
No. EEA rules generally permit only one valid EEA driving licence at a time.
Can the Swedish licence be used as identification?
Yes. A valid Swedish driving licence is an accepted identity document in Sweden.
Where are theory and practical tests taken?
At Trafikverket driver-testing offices.
Can examinations be booked online?
Yes. Trafikverket provides an online booking and payment service.
Can several categories appear on one licence?
Yes. All active categories and numerical restriction codes are recorded on the same licence.
Can the licence be restricted to automatic transmission?
Yes. Code 78 limits the holder to vehicles without a manual clutch.
Do driving-school prices differ?
Yes. Government examination and production fees are nationally set, while tuition and lesson prices vary.
