1. Pedestrian crossing

A pedestrian crossing is a designated place where pedestrians may cross a road. It is commonly indicated by road markings, traffic signs, signals or a combination of these measures.

Drivers must approach with appropriate caution and give way when required by local law. Pedestrians must also observe approaching traffic and follow any pedestrian signals or instructions from authorised traffic controllers.

When must drivers give way at a pedestrian crossing in Slovakia?

Under section 4a, effective from 1 September 2026, drivers must allow safe passage to pedestrians on a crossing or preparing to enter it. Approach at a speed that lets you stop if necessary; always stop for a pedestrian using a white cane. These specific duties do not apply to tram drivers. Follow applicable traffic controls.

Are all pedestrian crossings controlled the same way in Slovakia?

No. Follow the applicable traffic lights, signs and authorised directions where a crossing is controlled. At a crossing without such control, section 4a protects pedestrians on it or preparing to enter it; approach slowly enough to stop if necessary. A warning sign alone is different from the crossing itself.

May I enter a pedestrian crossing if the road beyond it is blocked in Slovakia?

Wait before the crossing until there is room to clear it without obstructing safe pedestrian passage. If another driver travelling in your direction slows or stops to let a pedestrian cross, you must also slow or stop. The section 4a duty has an exception for tram drivers.
