OvertakingUruguay
1. Overtaking
Overtaking is the act of passing another road user travelling in the same direction. It normally involves moving to another position or lane, passing the slower road user and returning to the appropriate position when it is safe.
Before overtaking, a driver should make sure there is sufficient visibility and space, check mirrors and blind spots, signal when required and ensure that no other road user is already overtaking. The manoeuvre must be completed without exceeding the speed limit or endangering other road users.
On which side do drivers normally overtake in Uruguay?
On a two-way road with two lanes, overtake using the left half only when the statutory safety checks are satisfied. On a carriageway with two or more lanes in the same direction, passing on the right is allowed in specified left-turning or slow-queue situations, subject to the general overtaking rules.
When should you avoid overtaking in Uruguay?
On a two-way carriageway, do not overtake where signs prohibit it, when approaching or crossing railway tracks, on bridges, viaducts or in tunnels, or when approaching a pedestrian crossing. Junction restrictions have a rural local-road exception. Do not overtake with insufficient visibility or without a safe, clear lane.
What extra care is needed when overtaking slower road users in Uruguay?
UNASEV’s official guidance advises other drivers to leave at least 1.5 metres of lateral clearance from cyclists and use the adjacent lane when passing. Signal, allow for unexpected movement and wait when there is insufficient space. This is the cited safety guidance; follow all applicable overtaking restrictions.
