1. Collision multiple

What should you do after a multiple-vehicle collision in Belgium?

Everyone involved must take the necessary measures to protect safety and keep traffic moving where possible. If anyone is injured, provide assistance and contact the emergency services when necessary.

Should you call the police after a multiple-vehicle collision in Belgium?

Police involvement is especially important when there are injuries, major damage, disagreement about the circumstances or a dangerous traffic situation. For minor material-damage accidents where everyone agrees, the parties can normally complete accident reports themselves.

Should vehicles be moved after a multiple-vehicle collision in Belgium?

If the accident caused only material damage, vehicles that obstruct traffic should generally be moved when this can be done safely. When bodily injury has occurred, the current Road Code does not require the vehicles to be moved.

Should you complete an accident report after a multiple-vehicle collision in Belgium?

Yes. It is useful to complete the European Accident Statement and carefully record the vehicles, circumstances, damage, witnesses and sequence of impacts, even when the police attend the scene.

How quickly should a multiple-vehicle collision be reported to the insurer in Belgium?

The accident should be reported as soon as possible and normally within eight days. If that deadline cannot reasonably be met, it should still be reported as soon as reasonably possible.

Does Belgium have a special insurance arrangement for chain collisions?

Yes. Belgian insurers can apply a specific multi-vehicle or chain-collision compensation arrangement in qualifying cases. It can allow an insurer to compensate its own insured without waiting for a lengthy process to determine exactly which driver was responsible.

Why can responsibility be difficult to determine in a Belgian chain collision?

A chain collision can involve several separate impacts occurring within seconds. Police reports, witness statements, photographs and accident forms can therefore be important in reconstructing the sequence and determining liability.
