Minimum speedAustria
1. Minimum speed
A minimum speed is the lowest speed that vehicles are required to maintain on a particular road or under specified conditions. Minimum-speed rules are intended to prevent vehicles travelling unnecessarily slowly from disrupting traffic or creating large speed differences between road users.
A minimum speed does not require drivers to maintain that speed when traffic, weather, visibility, road conditions or safety require them to slow down. The way minimum speeds are indicated and enforced varies between countries.
Does the 60 km/h motorway access threshold in Austria mean I must always drive that fast?
Normally, a motor vehicle must have a design speed of at least 60 km/h and be legally permitted to exceed 60 km/h. This is a vehicle admission condition, not an instruction to maintain that speed in congestion or unsafe conditions. Separate speed restrictions and safe-driving duties still apply.

May I drive more slowly when traffic or safety requires it in Austria?
Yes. Slow down for queues, restricted visibility, poor grip or another hazard. A vehicle’s eligibility to use the road does not remove the duty to choose a safe speed or obey traffic controls. Maintain a safe following distance rather than accelerating towards stationary traffic.

Does meeting the motorway access threshold remove other restrictions in Austria?
No. It does not remove restrictions on particular road users, vehicle classes or combinations, and it is not a maximum-speed limit. Check that the vehicle is admitted, then follow the restrictions and driving conditions on the actual road.

What does Austria’s blue circular minimum-speed sign mean?
It prescribes the displayed minimum in km/h. The official wording is Vorgeschriebene Mindestgeschwindigkeit. The duty to adapt speed to the road, traffic and visibility still applies; the sign does not require an unsafe speed.
