OvertakingBrazil
1. Overtaking
Overtaking is the act of passing another road user travelling in the same direction. It normally involves moving to another position or lane, passing the slower road user and returning to the appropriate position when it is safe.
Before overtaking, a driver should make sure there is sufficient visibility and space, check mirrors and blind spots, signal when required and ensure that no other road user is already overtaking. The manoeuvre must be completed without exceeding the speed limit or endangering other road users.
Which side is normally used for overtaking in Brazil?
Brazil’s Traffic Code requires passing a moving vehicle normally on the left. An exception exists where the vehicle ahead signals an intention to turn left; any manoeuvre must still comply with traffic signs and be safe.

When should you avoid overtaking in Brazil?
Check ahead and behind before overtaking. On a two-way road with a single carriageway, overtaking is prohibited at pedestrian and railway crossings and in curves or on crests without enough visibility, unless signs permit it. Overtaking is also prohibited at junctions and nearby. Never use an apparently safe gap to ignore those restrictions.

What extra care is needed when overtaking slower road users in Brazil?
Leave at least 1.5 metres of lateral clearance when passing a bicycle, as required by article 201, and reduce speed appropriately for the cyclist’s safety. Allow for wobbling or changes of direction. If there is not enough space for a safe, lawful pass, wait.
