1. Expressway
An expressway is a road intended to carry through traffic efficiently, usually at higher speeds than ordinary roads. Expressways often have limited access, multiple lanes, separated carriageways or grade-separated junctions, but their design and legal status vary between countries.
An expressway is not always a motorway. It may have intersections, traffic lights or direct access, and the permitted road users, speed limits and special rules depend on local signs and regulations.
How do people refer to an expressway in Indonesia?
Jalan bebas hambatan describes a public road with full access control, no at-grade junctions and fencing along its road reserve. Jalan tol is a road in that category whose users must pay a toll. Check the actual entry conditions, speed signs and payment arrangements.

May I stop on an Indonesian expressway for an ordinary break?
Use a designated rest or service area for an ordinary break. On a toll road, traffic lanes must not be used for stopping and the shoulder is reserved for emergency use, including emergency stops. Follow police traffic directions and the operator’s emergency instructions. Do not use the shoulder as a normal rest area.
