1. Zone
A traffic zone is an area in which a traffic rule applies throughout all included roads or road sections. The rule normally begins at a zone-entry sign and remains applicable until the corresponding end-of-zone sign is passed.
Zones may regulate speed, parking, access, vehicle categories, emissions or other traffic behaviour. The signs used, the roads covered and the effect of intersections or local exceptions depend on local traffic law.
How do people refer to traffic zones in Iceland?
Iceland’s speed-area signs use svæði með sérstaka takmörkun hámarkshraða, an area with a special maximum-speed restriction. The boundary sign shows the speed applicable within that area.

Where does a zone rule apply in Iceland?
The displayed maximum applies within the designated speed area. Do not resume the ordinary built-up-area limit simply because you have crossed a junction or entered another included street.

How do you know when a traffic zone ends in Iceland?
Look for the matching sign ending the speed area. Beyond it, follow the road’s applicable general or signed limit; the end of a 30 km/h area is not permission to drive at any speed.
