Weight limitMexico
1. Weight limit
A weight limit prohibits vehicles or vehicle combinations whose mass exceeds the value shown from entering or passing a road section, bridge, tunnel or other structure. Depending on local law, the restriction may concern the vehicle’s actual loaded mass, maximum authorised mass or load on an individual axle.
Drivers must know which type of mass the sign refers to and must include the vehicle, passengers, cargo and any trailer where required. A vehicle that exceeds the limit must use another suitable route.
Does every weight-limit sign measure the same kind of vehicle weight in Mexico?
Mexico’s national manual defines SR-17 by gross vehicle weight: the vehicle plus its load. If the restriction concerns the maximum permitted weight per axle, an additional panel states PESO POR EJE. Read the actual sign and supplementary plate; do not replace that local meaning with a foreign authorised-maximum-mass convention.
Vehicles heavier than indicated prohibited.
English • Traffic sign SR-17 • Mass limit: 10 t. Vehicles whose gross mass exceeds 10 tonnes must not pass. Includes vehicle and load; it is not an axle limit unless an additional panel specifies this.
Español • SR-17 • Peso restringido: 10 t. No pueden pasar vehículos cuyo peso bruto vehicular exceda de 10 toneladas. El valor incluye el vehículo y su carga; no es un límite por eje salvo que un tablero adicional lo indique.

Do cargo and trailers matter for a posted weight restriction in Mexico?
The national manual’s SR-17 restriction concerns the vehicle plus its load; an axle-weight restriction is identified separately by a PESO POR EJE panel. Check the actual vehicle or combination covered and its relevant gross and axle weights. Do not assume that the sign instead concerns a registered maximum mass or that removing cargo necessarily makes every restricted vehicle admissible.

What should you do if your vehicle exceeds a bridge weight limit in Mexico?
Do not drive onto the bridge. Follow the signed alternative route and check the vehicle’s gross and axle loads as applicable. A general heavy-vehicle permit does not automatically authorise crossing every restricted bridge.
