1. Expressway

An expressway is a road intended to carry through traffic efficiently, usually at higher speeds than ordinary roads. Expressways often have limited access, multiple lanes, separated carriageways or grade-separated junctions, but their design and legal status vary between countries.

An expressway is not always a motorway. It may have intersections, traffic lights or direct access, and the permitted road users, speed limits and special rules depend on local signs and regulations.

How do people refer to an expressway in Serbia?

The Serbian term is motoput, written мотопут in Cyrillic. It is a separate road category from a motorway.

Which lane should I normally use on a Serbian expressway?

On a road with several lanes in your direction, use the rightmost traffic lane, except for overtaking or when that lane is occupied by a queue of vehicles. The emergency lane is not an ordinary traffic lane. Escorted vehicles and vehicles with priority may use it when the other lanes are occupied; road-maintenance and works vehicles may use it while carrying out their work. Where there are at least three lanes in your direction, goods vehicles over 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass and vehicle combinations longer than 7 metres may use only the two right-hand lanes.
