5. Bike path

A bike path is a part of a road or a separate route intended primarily or exclusively for people riding bicycles. It may be physically separated from motor traffic, marked on the road surface or identified by traffic signs.

Bike paths may be one-way, two-way or shared with other road users. The permitted users, direction of travel, priority rules and obligation to use the path depend on local traffic signs and regulations.

What does Slovakia call a cycle path?

The official term is cestička pre cyklistov. Cyclists primarily use it and keep to the right. A combined walking and cycling path is a cestička pre chodcov a cyklistov, with additional pedestrian-protection rules.

Where should I ride if a Slovak cycle path is absent or unusable?

Ride close to the right edge of the carriageway. The right-hand shoulder may also be used if pedestrians are neither endangered nor restricted. An unusable cycle path does not justify ignoring the rules for the alternative surface.

Can cyclists ride two abreast on a Slovak cycle path?

Yes, provided they do not restrict or endanger other road users. The Act treats this differently from the usual single-file rule. On a shared or divided walking and cycling route, also respect pedestrians and the part allocated to each group.
