Road closedUnited States
1. Road closed
Road closed means that a road or section of road is temporarily or permanently unavailable to some or all traffic. A closure may be necessary because of roadworks, an accident, flooding, an event, structural damage or another situation that makes continued access unsafe or undesirable.
Drivers approaching a closed road should obey the closure signs and barriers and follow any indicated diversion. Exceptions may apply to authorised vehicles, emergency services, residents or local traffic where specifically indicated.
What does ROAD CLOSED mean in the US traffic-sign system?
A ROAD CLOSED sign indicates that the road is closed to ordinary traffic. The federal MUTCD distinguishes it from a closure that still permits local access and from advance warning signs.
What does ROAD CLOSED TO THRU TRAFFIC mean?
It means through traffic cannot continue, but local access may remain possible up to the actual closure. It does not promise that a particular address beyond the barrier can be reached.
Can you drive through a US ROAD CLOSED barrier to reach a destination?
Do not drive through a full closure. ROAD CLOSED signs and barricades restrict ordinary traffic; use the posted detour and follow directions from authorised traffic-control personnel.
