1. Bridge
A bridge is a structure that carries a road, path or railway over an obstacle such as a river, valley, railway line or another road. A road bridge may carry one or more roadways together with pedestrian or cycling facilities.
Drivers should follow any speed, weight, height, width or vehicle-access restrictions applying to the bridge. Particular care may be necessary on narrow, exposed or movable bridges and when weather conditions such as wind, rain or ice affect the road surface.
Which Belgian sign warns of a movable bridge?
The Belgian A9 warning sign indicates a movable bridge.
Does Belgium have a general warning sign for every ordinary bridge?
No. The A9 sign specifically warns of a movable bridge. An ordinary fixed bridge does not require the A9 sign simply because the road crosses a bridge.
What should you do when a Belgian movable bridge is closed to traffic?
Obey the traffic lights, barriers and instructions from authorised personnel and remain behind the appropriate stopping point until traffic is permitted to continue.
Can bridge operators give binding traffic instructions in Belgium?
Yes. Personnel appointed to supervise and operate bridges forming part of the public road are authorised persons for traffic on and near those bridges. Road users must immediately follow their lawful instructions.
Do heavy vehicles have a special following-distance rule on Belgian bridges?
Yes. Under the current Road Code, drivers of vehicles and combinations with a maximum authorised mass exceeding 7.5 tonnes must maintain at least 15 metres between one another on bridges.
Does the 15-metre bridge rule apply to ordinary cars?
No. The specific 15-metre rule applies to vehicles and combinations with a maximum authorised mass exceeding 7.5 tonnes. Ordinary drivers must nevertheless maintain sufficient following distance for the circumstances.
Is stopping or parking automatically prohibited on every Belgian bridge?
No. There is no single general rule prohibiting stopping or parking merely because a vehicle is on top of an ordinary bridge. The normal stopping and parking rules, local signs and the prohibition against creating danger or unnecessary obstruction still apply.
May you stop or park underneath a Belgian bridge?
On the roadway underneath a bridge, stopping and parking are prohibited unless local regulations provide otherwise.
Can a Belgian bridge have a vehicle weight restriction?
Yes. Traffic signs may impose maximum mass, axle-load or other restrictions where particular vehicles cannot safely or legally use the bridge.
Can a narrow Belgian bridge have priority signs?
Yes. Where opposing vehicles cannot easily pass each other, priority signs or traffic signals can regulate which direction must give way.
Should motorcyclists and cyclists take extra care on Belgian bridges?
Yes. Riders should adapt their speed and position to conditions such as crosswinds, slippery surfaces, narrow lanes or joints in the bridge deck and remain alert for other traffic.
Will the movable-bridge warning sign remain under the new Belgian Code?
Yes. From 1 June 2027, the new Code of the Public Road retains A9 as the warning sign for a movable bridge.
