1. Emergency exit

An emergency exit is a marked escape route that allows road users to leave a tunnel or other enclosed traffic facility during a serious incident such as a fire, smoke development or another emergency. Emergency exits lead towards a safer area separated from the immediate danger.

In an emergency, occupants should leave their vehicle when evacuation is necessary and follow the emergency-exit signs and instructions. They should move away from the danger rather than remaining inside the tunnel or returning to their vehicle.

Which signs indicate emergency exits in Belgian tunnels?

Sign F52 identifies an emergency exit in a tunnel. Sign F52bis indicates the direction of the nearest emergency exit and shows the remaining distance to it.

How frequently are escape-route signs placed in Belgian tunnels?

F52bis escape-route signs are placed on tunnel walls at intervals of no more than 25 metres. They indicate the nearest emergency exit in each direction together with the distance to it.

What should you do if you must evacuate a Belgian tunnel because of fire?

Switch off the vehicle, leave it and bring yourself and your passengers to safety using the marked emergency exits. Follow the escape-route signs and continue until you reach the designated safe area or assembly point outside.
