1. Malaysia

Malaysia is divided by the South China Sea into Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia on the island of Borneo, creating varied driving environments from dense urban and expressway networks around Kuala Lumpur to longer and more remote routes in Sabah and Sarawak. Traffic drives on the left, and overtaking is normally carried out on the right. Bahasa Melayu is the national and official language and is the principal language used for written road information, using the Latin alphabet; standard symbols make most warning and regulatory signs readily recognisable.

Malaysia has no nationwide motorway vignette, but many major expressways are tolled and increasingly rely on cashless systems such as Touch 'n Go and RFID. The general maximum on major expressways is 110 km/h, although lower signed limits apply on many sections. Tropical weather is another important consideration: the Northeast Monsoon, normally from November to March, can bring prolonged heavy rain and flooding, particularly along the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia and parts of Sarawak and Sabah. Motorcycles are also a major part of Malaysian traffic and must keep their lights switched on while travelling.

Let's explore the traffic rules of Malaysia.

2. Motorway

A motorway is a road specially designed and signposted for motor traffic. Motorways normally have separate carriageways for opposing traffic, controlled access through designated entrances and exits, no direct access to neighbouring properties, and no level crossings with other roads, railways or paths.

Special traffic rules apply on motorways. The permitted road users, speed limits, lane rules, tolls and emergency procedures vary between countries, so drivers must follow the local traffic signs and regulations.

3. Speed limit

A speed limit is the maximum legal speed permitted on a road, lane or within a designated area. It may be established by general traffic law or indicated by fixed, variable or temporary traffic signs.

A speed limit is a maximum, not a target speed. Drivers must travel more slowly whenever traffic, visibility, weather, road conditions, vulnerable road users or the condition of the vehicle make the maximum permitted speed unsafe.

Does entering a Malaysian city establish one universal urban maximum?

Do not choose a speed from the city name alone. Malaysian law provides for national limits and road-specific restrictions, including restrictions for particular vehicle classes or times. Check the applicable restriction and speed signs for the actual street.

May I use Malaysia’s general 110 km/h expressway limit on a section signed at 90 km/h?

No. The 90 km/h sign establishes the lower maximum for that section. Expressway limits vary with the road and location. The general 110 km/h figure does not cancel a lower posted restriction.

4. Bridge

A bridge is a structure that carries a road, path or railway over an obstacle such as a river, valley, railway line or another road. A road bridge may carry one or more roadways together with pedestrian or cycling facilities.

Drivers should follow any speed, weight, height, width or vehicle-access restrictions applying to the bridge. Particular care may be necessary on narrow, exposed or movable bridges and when weather conditions such as wind, rain or ice affect the road surface.

What should I check before crossing a bridge in Malaysia?

The Road Transport Act allows restrictions on vehicles using a bridge when their weight could damage it. Read the posted weight and vehicle restrictions before entry; the vehicle’s load must be included when assessing whether it may cross.

Who goes first on a narrow bridge in Malaysia?

Follow any traffic lights, give-way controls or signs allocating priority over oncoming traffic. Do not force your way onto a bridge that cannot accommodate both directions safely. A bridge warning alone does not give your direction priority.

May I stop or park on a bridge in Malaysia?

Follow posted restrictions and do not leave a vehicle where it causes danger, obstruction or undue inconvenience. Bridge restrictions may also control the permitted weight and vehicle class; a convenient-looking shoulder is not automatic permission to park.

5. Speed bump

A speed bump is a raised traffic-calming device placed across all or part of a road to make drivers reduce their speed. It is commonly used near homes, schools, crossings, parking areas and other places where low vehicle speeds are important.

Speed bumps vary in shape, height and legal status. Drivers should approach them at a low, controlled speed and follow any warning signs or speed limits that apply.

How should I recognise and approach a speed bump in Malaysia?

Look for a raised surface, approach warnings, road markings and any separate speed instruction. A traffic-calming device can be part of a raised crossing or junction, so identify the layout and the road users who may use it.

🔗 lom.agc.gov.my • Malaysia Road Transport Act 1987 — Sections 40, 43, 48, 69–70 and 77–79: speed, care, obstruction and actual traffic controls

Which speed should I use at a raised device in Malaysia?

Obey the applicable speed restriction and slow further for the device, visibility and other road users. Do not assume that a raised device carries the same numerical rule as one in another country; a safe approach can be well below the road’s maximum.

🔗 lom.agc.gov.my • Malaysia Road Transport Act 1987 — Sections 40, 43, 48, 69–70 and 77–79: speed, care, obstruction and actual traffic controls

🔗 mot.gov.my • MOT — Road Safety Plan 2022–2030, SB 4.1 and SP 4.1.2, housing areas, schools and pedestrian crossings

Does a raised road surface give pedestrians priority in Malaysia?

A raised device alone does not identify pedestrian priority. If it incorporates a crossing, apply the crossing’s controls and the national rules. The Road Transport Act provides for regulated pedestrian crossings and requires compliance with traffic directions. Read the crossing’s signals and markings; an advance warning alone is not the crossing’s stop signal.

6. Slope

A slope is a section of road that rises or descends noticeably. A steep slope can affect vehicle speed, braking distance, traction, visibility and the ability of heavy or low-powered vehicles to maintain a steady speed.

Warning signs may indicate a steep ascent or dangerous descent and may show the gradient as a percentage. Drivers should adjust their speed early, select a suitable gear and remain prepared for slow vehicles, bends and changing road conditions.

What does a steep-slope warning mean in Malaysia?

A steep or winding Malaysian road requires speed and control suited to the gradient, surface and view ahead. Obey the local warning and speed signs rather than importing a hill speed from another country.

How should I approach a steep descent in Malaysia?

Reduce speed before the descent and select a suitable gear to help control the vehicle. Keep enough following distance and avoid building up speed that requires continuous heavy braking. A warning gives no fixed safe descent speed: the gradient, surface, visibility, load and vehicle can require a speed well below the legal maximum.

7. Stop sign

A stop sign requires drivers to bring their vehicle to a complete stop and give way before entering or crossing the road ahead. The stop must be made at the stop line or another legally prescribed position.

After stopping, the driver may continue only when this can be done safely and without interfering with traffic that has priority. The sign does not create priority for the driver who has stopped.

Must I stop completely at a stop sign in Malaysia?

Yes. Come to a complete stop when the applicable stop sign controls your approach, even when you cannot see another road user. Slowing to a crawl is not a stop. The Malay word BERHENTI means stop.

Does stopping first give me priority at a stop sign in Malaysia?

A complete stop does not, by itself, give you priority. Give way to the road users entitled to pass under the junction’s signs and rules, check pedestrians and cyclists, and proceed only when the gap is safe. Do not follow another stopped vehicle through without satisfying your own stopping and yielding duties.

8. Give way

A give-way sign requires drivers to allow traffic with priority to proceed before entering, crossing or joining a road. Drivers must reduce speed, observe approaching traffic and stop when necessary.

Unlike a stop sign, a give-way sign does not always require a complete stop. The driver may continue without stopping only when the route is clearly safe and no road user with priority is forced to change speed or direction.

Must you always stop when giving way in Malaysia?

No. A give-way control requires stopping when necessary to yield or obtain a safe view. A stop sign requires a complete stop even if the road appears empty.

What should you check before proceeding after giving way in Malaysia?

Wait until the manoeuvre is safe. Check the priority traffic, the view in both directions and enough space to complete the entry. Giving way to one vehicle does not remove duties towards another driver, a cyclist or a pedestrian.

9. Roundabout

A roundabout is a circular road arrangement in which traffic travels around a central island in one designated direction. Vehicles enter and leave through connecting roads, and traffic signs or local rules determine who has priority.

Drivers should reduce speed, choose a suitable lane, observe all road users and signal as required when leaving. The direction of travel, entry priority, lane use and rules for cyclists and pedestrians depend on local traffic signs and regulations.

Who has priority at a roundabout in Malaysia?

The Royal Malaysia Police roundabout guide tells entering drivers to give way to vehicles already circulating. Choose the appropriate approach lane and follow the actual Beri Laluan signs, lane arrows and any signal or authorised traffic control. Circulating priority does not authorise an unsafe lane change.

How should you choose a roundabout lane in Malaysia?

Choose your intended exit before entering and follow the lane arrows and destination signs. Keep to the marked route and make any permitted lane change only when safe; having priority over entering traffic does not give you priority to change lanes.

10. Pedestrian crossing

A pedestrian crossing is a designated place where pedestrians may cross a road. It is commonly indicated by road markings, traffic signs, signals or a combination of these measures.

Drivers must approach with appropriate caution and give way when required by local law. Pedestrians must also observe approaching traffic and follow any pedestrian signals or instructions from authorised traffic controllers.

11. Railway crossing

A railway crossing, also called a level crossing or railroad crossing, is a place where a road or path crosses railway tracks at the same level. It may be protected by barriers, warning lights, bells, traffic signs or a combination of these measures.

Road users must approach carefully and never enter when a train is approaching, warning signals are active or the exit is blocked. They should cross promptly and must never stop, wait or become trapped on the tracks.

12. Mandatory direction

A mandatory-direction sign requires drivers to travel only in the direction or one of the directions indicated by its arrow or arrows. It may require traffic to continue straight ahead, turn, or pass an obstacle on a specified side.

The sign does not itself determine priority or speed. Drivers must still use the appropriate lane, signal when required and give way according to local traffic signs and regulations.

What does a mandatory-direction sign require in Malaysia?

Where a compulsory-direction sign is installed in Malaysia, follow only the arrow direction or permitted combination of directions. The restriction applies at the location or movement it regulates; it is not an instruction to ignore other traffic controls.

13. School area

A school area is a road or group of roads near a school where large numbers of children may walk, cycle, cross the road or enter and leave vehicles. It may be identified by warning signs, zone signs, road markings, traffic-calming measures or flashing lights.

Special speed limits, parking restrictions or access rules may apply permanently or only during school arrival and departure times. Drivers should reduce speed, watch carefully for children and be prepared to stop.

14. Overtaking

Overtaking is the act of passing another road user travelling in the same direction. It normally involves moving to another position or lane, passing the slower road user and returning to the appropriate position when it is safe.

Before overtaking, a driver should make sure there is sufficient visibility and space, check mirrors and blind spots, signal when required and ensure that no other road user is already overtaking. The manoeuvre must be completed without exceeding the speed limit or endangering other road users.

15. Crossing animals

An animals-crossing warning indicates a place or road section where wild animals, livestock or ridden animals may enter or cross the road. Animals may appear suddenly, move unpredictably or be difficult to see in darkness, vegetation or poor weather.

Drivers should reduce speed, scan both sides of the road and remain prepared to stop. The warning sign does not itself give animals priority or impose a numerical speed limit, but drivers must avoid frightening, endangering or colliding with them.

Which animals might drivers encounter on roads in Malaysia?

An animal-warning sign identifies a risk of animals entering the road. Read the actual pictogram, any supplementary information and local warnings. Slow when animals may be present, leave space and watch for more animals following; the sign does not establish that the hazard ends immediately beyond it.

16. Slippery road

A slippery road has reduced tyre grip and can make steering, braking and acceleration less effective. Roads may become slippery because of rain, ice, snow, mud, oil, loose material or other substances on the surface. Drivers should reduce speed, increase their following distance and avoid sudden steering, braking or acceleration. Extra caution is needed in bends, on bridges and wherever the road surface changes unexpectedly.

Does a slippery-road warning sign in Malaysia automatically impose a lower number?

The warning sign highlights a reduced-grip risk; it normally does not itself prescribe a new numerical speed limit. A separate speed-limit sign, temporary restriction or local condition may still apply. Travel below the legal maximum when necessary for safety.

17. Rockfall

A rockfall warning indicates a road section where rocks or stones may fall from a cliff, cutting or steep slope, or where fallen material may already be present on the road. The danger may affect the full carriageway and can appear suddenly.

Drivers should reduce speed, scan the road and slopes ahead, increase their following distance and remain prepared to stop. They should avoid unnecessary stopping in the exposed section and never attempt to move unstable rocks themselves.

Where might falling rocks be a hazard on roads in Malaysia?

A falling-rocks warning identifies a slope-related hazard ahead. Watch for debris already on the carriageway and follow any closure or traffic-control instruction. The warning does not guarantee a clear road or provide a fixed safe speed; avoid stopping beneath an exposed slope unnecessarily.

18. Curve

A curve is a section of road that changes direction to the left or right. A sharp, unexpected or poorly visible curve can reduce a driver’s view of approaching traffic, stopped vehicles, pedestrians and other hazards.

Drivers should reduce speed before entering the curve, remain within their lane and use smooth steering, braking and acceleration. Warning signs may indicate the direction of the first curve or a series of successive curves.

What makes a bend dangerous in Malaysia?

A bend can shorten the visible road and reduce the margin for correcting an error. Slow before entering and maintain control within the distance you can see to be clear. Grip, camber, traffic and hidden road users can require a speed well below the posted maximum.

19. Chevron

A chevron is a V-shaped or arrow-shaped road marker used to show a sharp change in the direction of a road. Chevron boards are normally placed along the outside of a curve so that their points indicate the direction in which the road continues.

Chevrons improve the visibility and alignment of a curve, especially in darkness or poor weather. They do not normally impose a speed limit or determine priority, so drivers must reduce speed before the curve and follow all other signs and road markings.

Wikimedia.org • CC0
What is the purpose of chevron boards on a road in Malaysia?

Chevron alignment boards help drivers see which way a sharp bend continues, especially in darkness or poor visibility. Their precise shape and colour depend on the local sign system; pay attention to the alignment shown rather than assuming one universal design.

20. Wrong-way driving

Wrong-way driving occurs when a driver travels against the legally permitted direction of traffic. It may happen on a one-way road, divided road, motorway entrance or exit, or another road section reserved for traffic travelling in one direction.

Wrong-way driving creates an extreme risk of a head-on collision. Drivers must follow direction signs, no-entry signs, lane arrows and road markings. Anyone who accidentally enters a road in the wrong direction should slow down, warn other traffic, stop in the safest available place and contact the emergency services.

How can you avoid driving the wrong way in Malaysia?

Traffic normally keeps left here. Keep to the correct side of the road and use no-entry and one-way signs to identify prohibited approaches; do not enter an exit ramp against its permitted direction.

21. Height limit

A height limit prohibits vehicles whose total height exceeds the value shown from entering or passing a road section, bridge, tunnel, gateway or other structure. The vehicle’s height includes its load and any equipment attached above it.

Drivers of high vehicles must know their exact height, observe advance warnings and use an alternative route when necessary. They should never rely only on visual judgement or attempt to pass beneath a structure when safe clearance is uncertain.

How should you read a low-bridge height restriction in Malaysia?

Identify the actual height restriction and any separate advance-clearance warning, and read the measurement and supplementary information. Check the vehicle at its highest point with its load and fitted equipment before entering. A warning describes a hazard; a regulatory restriction controls entry. Use a permitted alternative if the vehicle cannot pass safely and lawfully.

Does a roof load count when checking vehicle height in Malaysia?

Yes for practical clearance: measure the vehicle at its highest point with its load and fitted accessories, such as a roof box, bicycle or roof rack. Check the local legal measurement rules as well; an empty vehicle’s registered height is not enough when equipment has been added.

22. Selective barriers

Selective barriers are physical access-control devices that allow certain road users or authorised vehicles to pass while restricting other traffic. They may include fixed, removable, folding or retractable bollards, gates, barriers and width-filtering installations.

The permitted users are determined by traffic signs, access conditions and local regulations, not by the barrier alone. Drivers should approach slowly, verify that they are authorised and wait until any moving barrier is fully open or retracted before continuing.

23. Traffic lights

Traffic lights use coloured lights, arrows or symbols to regulate when road users may proceed, must prepare to stop or must remain stopped. Separate signals may apply to particular directions, lanes, pedestrians, cyclists or public-transport vehicles.

A green light permits movement only when the route is clear and the movement is otherwise legal. Road users must still follow priority rules, turning restrictions, lane markings and instructions from authorised traffic controllers.

24. Traffic lights warning

A traffic lights warning is a warning sign that alerts drivers that traffic signals are located ahead. It is commonly used where the signals may be unexpected, difficult to see from a distance or located on a road where drivers need additional time to prepare to stop.

Drivers approaching a traffic lights warning should reduce speed when necessary, watch for the signals ahead and be prepared to stop if the traffic light changes or traffic is waiting at the intersection.

How are traffic lights ahead warned of in Malaysia?

A yellow warning sign showing a traffic-signal symbol can alert drivers to traffic lights ahead; the exact shape and application follow local sign standards. It warns of a potential need to stop, but does not replace the actual signals.

25. Driving licence

A driving licence is an official document authorising a person to drive one or more specified categories of motor vehicle. It may contain conditions, restrictions, category codes and expiry dates that determine which vehicles the holder may drive.

Drivers must hold a licence that is valid for the vehicle category and jurisdiction concerned. A licence may be provisional, full, restricted, suspended or withdrawn, and additional qualifications may be required for professional driving.
