4. Speed limit

A speed limit is the maximum legal speed permitted on a road, lane or within a designated area. It may be established by general traffic law or indicated by fixed, variable or temporary traffic signs.

A speed limit is a maximum, not a target speed. Drivers must travel more slowly whenever traffic, visibility, weather, road conditions, vulnerable road users or the condition of the vehicle make the maximum permitted speed unsafe.

Which general speed limits should car drivers know in Romania?

For an ordinary category B car, the general maxima are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on other rural roads, 100 km/h on European E-roads, 120 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways. Suitable urban sections can be signed up to 80 km/h for category A and B vehicles. Novice drivers and towing combinations have lower outside-area maxima.

How do Romanian outside-area limits change for a novice driver?

A driver with less than one year of driving experience must observe maxima outside built-up areas that are 20 km/h below the normal maxima for the vehicle category. This does not raise a lower signed limit; obey that restriction as well.

Is every Romanian national road limited to 100 km/h for cars?

No. The 100 km/h category is for national roads designated as European E-roads. Other ordinary rural roads generally have a 90 km/h maximum for category A and B vehicles, while expressways have 120 km/h. Check the road category and signs.
