60. Road debris

Road debris consists of objects, materials or substances that are lying on or have fallen onto the road and may interfere with traffic. Examples include pieces of vehicles, lost cargo, stones, branches, broken glass, litter and materials spilled from vehicles.

Road debris can create a serious hazard for drivers, cyclists and other road users. Drivers should watch the road ahead, reduce speed when necessary and avoid sudden manoeuvres when safely passing an obstruction.

Road debris is any object, material or substance lying on the road that may obstruct traffic or create a hazard.

What should you do when you see debris on the road?
