4. Zone

A traffic zone is an area in which a traffic rule applies throughout all included roads or road sections. The rule normally begins at a zone-entry sign and remains applicable until the corresponding end-of-zone sign is passed.

Zones may regulate speed, parking, access, vehicle categories, emissions or other traffic behaviour. The signs used, the roads covered and the effect of intersections or local exceptions depend on local traffic law.

How do people refer to traffic zones in Spain?

Spanish traffic arrangements use terms such as zona peatonal for a pedestrian zone and zona de coexistencia for a zone with special rules for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. Read the current sign and any access conditions.

Where does a zone rule apply in Spain?

Apply the specific category shown at the entrance. A road with an ordinary 30 km/h limit is not automatically a pedestrian-priority zone, and a low-emission zone principally concerns vehicle access rather than one universal speed.

Can I rely on the older Spanish Zone 30 sign as the current national zone category?

The sign catalogue changed on 1 July 2025. The old Zone 30 sign was removed, and withdrawn signs had to be removed within one year. Follow the current speed and area signs; an older photograph does not establish today’s rules.

How do you know when a traffic zone ends in Spain?

Use the appropriate end sign or the stated boundary of the current restriction. Check speed, access and pedestrian arrangements separately: the end of one does not cancel every restriction on the adjoining street.
