1. Footpath
A footpath is a path or part of a road intended primarily for pedestrian traffic. It may run alongside a road, through a park or residential area, or independently from roads used by motor vehicles.
A footpath may be reserved exclusively for pedestrians or may form part of a shared route with cyclists or other permitted users. Access, priority and permitted users depend on the traffic signs and local regulations applying to the path.
What is Hungary’s official wording for a roadside pavement?
A roadside pavement is a járda. A pedestrian path is a gyalogút, and a combined walking and cycling path is a gyalog- és kerékpárút. Their signs determine whether the route is for pedestrians alone or for both groups.

Can I cycle on a Hungarian pavement when the carriageway is unsuitable?
In a built-up area, cyclists may use the pavement where the carriageway is unsuitable for cycling. The exception also covers children under 12 who are prohibited from cycling on a main road. Do not disturb pedestrians, ride in single file and keep to 10 km/h or less.

Where should pedestrians walk if there is no usable Hungarian pavement?
Use the pavement or, where none is available, the stopping strip, verge or cycle path as the pedestrian rules allow. If these are absent or unsuitable, use the edge of the carriageway in single file. Outside built-up areas, walk on the left facing traffic. People pushing a bicycle or moped, and wheelchair users treated as pedestrians, keep to the right.
