3. Speed limit

A speed limit is the maximum legal speed permitted on a road, lane or within a designated area. It may be established by general traffic law or indicated by fixed, variable or temporary traffic signs.

A speed limit is a maximum, not a target speed. Drivers must travel more slowly whenever traffic, visibility, weather, road conditions, vulnerable road users or the condition of the vehicle make the maximum permitted speed unsafe.

Which general speed limits should car drivers know in Indonesia?

The national framework provides maxima of 50 km/h in urban areas, 30 km/h in residential areas, 80 km/h on interurban roads and 100 km/h on freeways. Lower limits can be established and signed. On freeways, a 60 km/h minimum applies under free-flow conditions; congestion or other unsafe conditions are not a reason to maintain that speed.

Must I maintain Indonesia’s freeway minimum when traffic is congested?

No. The 60 km/h minimum in the national framework is conditional on free-flow conditions. Congestion or a hazard can require a lower speed. Do not accelerate to meet a minimum where doing so would be unsafe.

Does an Indonesian residential road have the normal 50 km/h urban maximum?

The national framework distinguishes kawasan perkotaan, an urban area, from kawasan permukiman, a residential area. Their maxima are generally 50 and 30 km/h respectively. Read the local classification and any lower signed restriction.
