Driving licenceNew Zealand
1. Driving licence
A driving licence is an official document authorising a person to drive one or more specified categories of motor vehicle. It may contain conditions, restrictions, category codes and expiry dates that determine which vehicles the holder may drive.
Drivers must hold a licence that is valid for the vehicle category and jurisdiction concerned. A licence may be provisional, full, restricted, suspended or withdrawn, and additional qualifications may be required for professional driving.
Which driving-licence entitlement is needed for an ordinary car in New Zealand?
In New Zealand, ordinary passenger cars are covered by the appropriate Class 1 entitlement. A different entitlement may be needed for motorcycles, heavy vehicles, trailers or passenger transport.

Can a visitor drive in New Zealand using a driving licence issued abroad?
For a qualifying visitor with a valid overseas car licence, the limit depends on the last arrival date. If that arrival was before 1 November 2026, the limit remains 18 months from that arrival. For arrivals on or after 1 November 2026, it is 12 months. Separate periods apply to motorcycle and truck licences, and all other licensing conditions still apply.
Does an International Driving Permit replace the original licence in New Zealand?
No. An IDP or acceptable English translation accompanies the valid overseas licence when required; it does not replace the original licence. Confirm the arrival-date time limit and any conversion conditions.
