A box junction is a special type of road marking at an intersection or crossing. It is marked with yellow criss-cross lines inside a square or rectangular box painted on the road surface. The main purpose is to keep the intersection clear and prevent vehicles from blocking the road when traffic is heavy or congested. Many drivers wrongly stop inside the box when traffic ahead is stuck. This can block the intersection, causing traffic jams and fines in many countries.
