5. Speed limit

A speed limit is the maximum legal speed permitted on a road, lane or within a designated area. It may be established by general traffic law or indicated by fixed, variable or temporary traffic signs.

A speed limit is a maximum, not a target speed. Drivers must travel more slowly whenever traffic, visibility, weather, road conditions, vulnerable road users or the condition of the vehicle make the maximum permitted speed unsafe.

Which general speed limits should car drivers know in Czechia?

For an ordinary car in Czechia, the general maxima are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside them, 110 km/h on roads for motor vehicles and 130 km/h on motorways outside built-up areas. The built-up-area motorway and motor-vehicle-road default is 80 km/h. Roads without directionally separated carriageways require a reduction to no more than 90 km/h. Authorised signed increases are possible under Section 18; obey the limit actually in force.

May I drive at 150 km/h on every Czech motorway?

No. The D3 trial between approximately kilometres 84 and 131 permits 150 km/h only when the variable signs display it and the required conditions are met. The pilot is scheduled through the end of 2026; it is not a nationwide increase.

Does a Czech motorway inside a built-up area have the ordinary rural motorway limit?

No. The statutory built-up-area motorway and motor-vehicle-road default is 80 km/h. Follow the actual signs and authorised exceptions; the motorway classification alone does not make every urban section a 130 km/h road.
