8. Bike path

A bike path is a part of a road or a separate route intended primarily or exclusively for people riding bicycles. It may be physically separated from motor traffic, marked on the road surface or identified by traffic signs.

Bike paths may be one-way, two-way or shared with other road users. The permitted users, direction of travel, priority rules and obligation to use the path depend on local traffic signs and regulations.

What does Czechia call a cycle path?

The official term is stezka pro cyklisty. A cycle lane is a jízdní pruh pro cyklisty, while a combined route is a stezka pro chodce a cyklisty. Check the signs and markings to identify the facility and permitted direction.

Must cyclists use a provided cycle path in Czechia?

Generally yes, at the relevant place and in the relevant direction. The current Act makes an exception where using the facility could endanger traffic safety or the flow of traffic. This is a conditional exception, rather than a general choice to ignore a cycle path.

Can I ride in the pedestrian part of a divided Czech path?

Normally use only the cycling part. The Act permits entering the pedestrian part for specified manoeuvres, such as avoiding an obstacle, overtaking, turning or entering the path. You must not endanger pedestrians while doing so.
