43. 2-1 Road

A 2-1 road, also called a 2-minus-1 road, is a two-way road with one central area used by motor traffic and an advisory lane or edge strip on each side, commonly intended for cyclists. The central part is too narrow for two opposing motor vehicles to pass each other while remaining entirely within it.

When motor vehicles meet, they may need to move temporarily into the side strips to pass each other, where local rules permit. Drivers must first check that they can do so safely and must take particular care not to endanger cyclists or other road users using the side areas.

What is a 2-1 road?

A 2-1 road is a two-way road with a narrow central area for motor vehicles and an advisory lane or edge strip on each side, commonly used by cyclists.

How do two vehicles pass each other on a 2-1 road?

When opposing vehicles meet, they may need to move partly into the side areas to create enough space to pass. They should do so only when the side area is clear and the applicable traffic rules permit it.

Why are 2-1 roads used?

They are intended to provide more visible space for cycling on roads that are too narrow for conventional cycle lanes and two full motor-vehicle lanes, while still allowing two-way motor traffic.
