3. Bike path

A bike path is a part of a road or a separate route intended primarily or exclusively for people riding bicycles. It may be physically separated from motor traffic, marked on the road surface or identified by traffic signs.

Bike paths may be one-way, two-way or shared with other road users. The permitted users, direction of travel, priority rules and obligation to use the path depend on local traffic signs and regulations.

How does Ukraine distinguish a cycle path from a cycle lane?

A велосипедна доріжка is a signed cycling path outside the carriageway, separate from or adjoining a pedestrian surface. A велосипедна смуга is a signed and marked cycling lane within the carriageway. They are distinct facilities.

May I use the Ukrainian carriageway when a cycle path is provided beside it?

No. The Rules prohibit cycling on the carriageway where an adjoining cycle path is provided. Use the cycling facility and obey its controls. An ordinary pavement is subject to separate restrictions and is not automatically another cycling option.

Who gives way where a Ukrainian cycle path crosses a road outside a junction?

The cyclist must give way to vehicles travelling on the road. The cycle path itself does not establish priority at that crossing. Follow any applicable traffic controls and check approaching traffic before crossing.
