2. Speed limit

A speed limit is the maximum legal speed permitted on a road, lane or within a designated area. It may be established by general traffic law or indicated by fixed, variable or temporary traffic signs.

A speed limit is a maximum, not a target speed. Drivers must travel more slowly whenever traffic, visibility, weather, road conditions, vulnerable road users or the condition of the vehicle make the maximum permitted speed unsafe.

Which general speed limits should car drivers know in Ukraine?

For an ordinary car without a trailer, general maxima are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on other roads outside them, 110 km/h on physically divided roads and 130 km/h on designated motorways. Residential and pedestrian zones have a 20 km/h maximum. Novice drivers and some vehicle categories have lower ceilings.

What speed ceiling applies to Ukrainian drivers with less than two years’ experience?

The maximum is 70 km/h, subject to any lower road or area limit. A higher motorway sign does not remove this novice-driver restriction. For example, a 50 km/h built-up-area limit still requires no more than 50 km/h.
