62. Bicycle parking station

A bicycle parking station is a designated place or facility where bicycles can be parked and secured. It may consist of simple bicycle racks or a larger covered, enclosed or access-controlled parking facility with many bicycle spaces.

Bicycle parking stations are commonly provided near railway stations, public-transport stops, workplaces, schools, shopping areas and city centres. Users should park their bicycles in the designated spaces, secure them properly and avoid obstructing pedestrian routes, cycle facilities, entrances or other road users.

What is a bicycle parking station?

A bicycle parking station is a designated facility where bicycles can be parked and secured.

What facilities can bicycle parking stations provide?

They may provide bicycle racks, covered parking, lockers, access control, surveillance or spaces for larger bicycles. Facilities vary between locations.

Where are bicycle parking stations commonly found?

They are commonly provided near railway stations, public-transport hubs, schools, workplaces, shopping areas and busy city centres.

Should you lock your bicycle in a bicycle parking station?

Yes. Even in a designated or secure facility, the bicycle should normally be locked appropriately to reduce the risk of theft.

Can a bicycle parking station be free?

Yes. Bicycle parking may be free or subject to payment, particularly where secure, enclosed or access-controlled facilities are provided.

Can electric bicycles use bicycle parking stations?

Yes, normally. Some facilities may also provide charging points, although the bicycle and battery must comply with the operator's safety rules.

Can cargo bikes use ordinary bicycle parking?

Only where there is sufficient space and the facility permits them. Larger bicycle parking stations may provide special spaces for cargo bikes, longtails or other oversized cycles.

Can speed pedelecs use bicycle parking stations?

This depends on the signs and facility rules. Some parking facilities accommodate both ordinary bicycles and speed pedelecs, while others reserve separate spaces.

Can you leave a bicycle outside a designated parking station?

This depends on local law. Where parking elsewhere is permitted, the bicycle should be positioned so that it does not obstruct or endanger pedestrians, cyclists or other road users.

Can bicycles block pedestrian routes when parked?

No. Bicycle parking should leave sufficient space for pedestrians, including people using wheelchairs, mobility aids or tactile guidance routes.

Can an abandoned bicycle be removed from a parking station?

Yes, depending on local rules and facility conditions. Operators or authorities may remove bicycles that are abandoned, incorrectly parked or left beyond the permitted period.

What is secure bicycle parking?

Secure bicycle parking provides additional protection against theft through measures such as controlled access, enclosed storage, surveillance or individual bicycle lockers.
