94. Electric bicycle

An electric bicycle, or e-bike, is a bicycle equipped with an electric motor that assists the rider while travelling. Most electric bicycles use pedal assistance, meaning that the motor provides additional power while the rider pedals.

When is an electric bicycle treated as a normal bicycle in the Netherlands?

A conventional pedal-assisted e-bike has motor assistance only up to 25 km/h and a motor rated at no more than 250 W. It needs no moped licence, number plate or compulsory third-party motor insurance; modified or throttle-powered vehicles may be classified differently.
