Traffic rules

The traffic rules describe how a road user must act on the public road, which includes obligations but also advice on how to drive sensibly and safely. All road users must know and apply the traffic rules.

Accident

An accident happens quickly. What should you do if you are involved in an accident?

Injured

In case of an accident with minor injuries you move the vehicle to a place where it’s allowed to stand. If that is not possible or if there are serious injuries, then you place the warning triangle and try to prevent more accidents from happening. Call the international emergency number 112, with this number the police is also automatically informed. In an accident with injuries, you should always notify the police.

Do not move seriously injured, only if it is absolutely necessary. They can have fractures or internal bleeding. A helmet is best left on the head, except if the injured person has breathing difficulties or, for example, must vomit. Do not give a wounded person a drink or medication (not even water). In case of severe bleeding, cover the wound or apply a pressure bandage.

Damage

In case of an accident with damage, you move the vehicle to a place where it’s allowed to stand. If that is not possible, then you place the warning triangle and try to prevent more accidents from happening. Also think about your own safety!

In the case of an accident without injuries, it’s not necessary to notify the police, it is enough to fill in and sign the European accident claim form. With your signature you confirm that you agree with what has been entered on the document. The front of the form is completed and signed by both parties. The back of the form you fill in separately (may also be at home). You must always stay on site if you are involved in an accident. From the age of 15 you are obliged to show your identity card if one of the people involved requests it. In case of discussion, it is best to let the police come.

If you have damaged a vehicle or property and you do not find the owner, you leave your details or you inform the police.

Warning triangle

An accident or a defective vehicle on the road can cause very dangerous traffic situations. To prevent additional accidents, you must warn other road users about the accident.

  • Turn on four warning lights
  • Switch off the engine
  • Do not smoke or make a fire
  • Place warning triangle:
    • Normal roads at least 30 meters from the scene of the accident
    • On motorways at least 100 meters
    • It must be visible for approaching vehicles from 50 meters
Do not forget to put on the fluo jacket if you leave the car on a motorway. It is mandatory for the driver. It is not mandatory for passengers, but recommended.

Hit-and-run

A driver commits a hit-and-run if he leaves the scene of the accident with the intention of escaping the consequences. Never commit a hit-and-run, there are very severe penalties!
