40. Disabled parking
Disabled parking refers to parking spaces and parking privileges reserved for people with disabilities who meet the applicable eligibility requirements. Reserved spaces are normally identified by the international wheelchair symbol and are positioned to provide easier access to nearby facilities.
Use of a disabled parking space generally requires a valid disabled parking permit or card. The permit normally belongs to the eligible person rather than to a particular vehicle and may only be used when that person is driving or travelling in the vehicle.

Do disability parking permits give identical concessions throughout Australia?
No. In New South Wales, a valid mobility permit offers free council on-street metered parking and additional time in ordinary timed bays. In Victoria, regular parking fees can still apply and different permit classes have different entitlements. Check the relevant state's rules.

Can a mobility parking permit override the time limit on a reserved bay in New South Wales?
No. Where a dedicated accessible space displays a time limit, a permit holder must respect that limit. The longer-stay concessions for ordinary timed spaces do not override a time limit on a reserved accessible bay.

What extra time does Newcastle allow an accessible-permit holder in a 30-minute space?
In an ordinary timed parking space with a limit of exactly 30 minutes, Newcastle’s published concession allows up to 2 hours with a valid permit displayed. This does not extend a signposted time limit on a dedicated accessible bay, and private-car-park conditions may differ.
