12. Give way

A give-way sign requires drivers to allow traffic with priority to proceed before entering, crossing or joining a road. Drivers must reduce speed, observe approaching traffic and stop when necessary.

Unlike a stop sign, a give-way sign does not always require a complete stop. The driver may continue without stopping only when the route is clearly safe and no road user with priority is forced to change speed or direction.

What does giving way mean in Hungary?

Giving way means allowing the road user with priority to proceed. Do not force a priority vehicle to change direction or speed abruptly, and do not obstruct a pedestrian who has priority. At a give-way sign, check the crossing road and any supplementary priority-route or cycle indication.

English • Traffic sign figure 9 • Give way. At the junction, drivers must give way to vehicles approaching on the intersecting or joining road, or, if a supplementary plate shows the junction layout, on the road shown by a thick line (figure 10). If the supplementary plate includes a cycle-traffic symbol (figure 10/a), drivers must give way to cyclists crossing on the part of the carriageway marked for cycle traffic.

Magyar • 9.

Must you always stop when giving way in Hungary?

No. A give-way control requires stopping when necessary to yield or obtain a safe view. A stop sign requires a complete stop even if the road appears empty.

What should you check before proceeding after giving way in Hungary?

Wait until the manoeuvre is safe. Check the priority traffic, the view in both directions and enough space to complete the entry. Giving way to one vehicle does not remove duties towards another driver, a cyclist or a pedestrian.
