18. Pedestrian crossing

A pedestrian crossing is a designated place where pedestrians may cross a road. It is commonly indicated by road markings, traffic signs, signals or a combination of these measures.

Drivers must approach with appropriate caution and give way when required by local law. Pedestrians must also observe approaching traffic and follow any pedestrian signals or instructions from authorised traffic controllers.

When must drivers give way at a pedestrian crossing in Hungary?

Give way to pedestrians crossing at a designated pedestrian crossing. Approach with particular care and slowly enough to stop before it if necessary. At a junction, turning drivers must also give way to pedestrians crossing the road they are entering, even where no pedestrian crossing is marked. Follow any applicable traffic controls.

Are all pedestrian crossings controlled the same way in Hungary?

No. Where pedestrian signals are provided, steady green permits crossing, flashing green means pedestrians must not start crossing, and red prohibits entry. Drivers follow their signals and must give way when turning across pedestrians crossing with permission. At an uncontrolled marked crossing, pedestrian priority and the careful-approach rules apply.

May I enter a pedestrian crossing if the road beyond it is blocked in Hungary?

Wait before the crossing until you can clear it without obstructing pedestrians. If a vehicle is stopped before a designated pedestrian crossing, including because of traffic, stop before passing it. Continue only after checking that you can do so without infringing pedestrian priority.
