5. Speed limit

A speed limit is the maximum legal speed permitted on a road, lane or within a designated area. It may be established by general traffic law or indicated by fixed, variable or temporary traffic signs.

A speed limit is a maximum, not a target speed. Drivers must travel more slowly whenever traffic, visibility, weather, road conditions, vulnerable road users or the condition of the vehicle make the maximum permitted speed unsafe.

Which general speed limits should car drivers know in Russia?

For an ordinary passenger car without a trailer, the general maxima are 60 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside them and 110 km/h on motorways. Suitable motorway sections may be specifically authorised and signed up to 130 km/h. Residential zones, bicycle zones and courtyard areas have a 20 km/h maximum.

Does every Russian motorway allow cars to travel at 130 km/h?

No. The ordinary car motorway maximum is 110 km/h. A suitable section must be specifically authorised and signed for the higher maximum, which can be up to 130 km/h. The motorway entrance sign alone does not grant that higher speed.

Do Russian courtyard areas have a lower maximum even without being an ordinary main road?

Yes. The maximum in residential zones, bicycle zones and courtyard areas is 20 km/h. Treat courtyard access with particular care; the general built-up-area 60 km/h figure is not the applicable maximum there.
