Traffic rules

The traffic rules describe how a road user must act on the public road, which includes obligations but also advice on how to drive sensibly and safely. All road users must know and apply the traffic rules.


Lights

The lights on a vehicle have multiple functions and are a very important aspect of road safety. The lights on your vehicle increase your sight at night. They also allow other road users to better see your vehicle's presence, position, size and direction.

Keep your lights clean and free of dirt, snow and ice. Broken lenses can cause confusion for other drivers, so replace them as soon as you can. Make sure headlights are adjusted correctly to give you the best view of the road.

Dipped beam

The dipped beams illuminate the road without blinding other road users, they illuminate the road to about 30 meters. The red tail lights also illuminates when the dipped beam is switched on. The dipped beam is the standard lighting that you have to use when it gets dark.


High beam

The high beam is used to illuminate the road so you can see further, it provides a clear view up to 100 meter. Because the high beam is very intense and blinds other road users. You are not allowed to use your high beam when approaching or driving behind another road user.


Fog light

The fog light may be used in bad weather conditions such as heavy rain, fog or snowfall. The fog light can also blind other road users, so it only with bad weather. Not all cars are equipped with fog lights so they are not mandatory to use.


Turn signals

The turn signals are blinking lights at the left and right front and rear corners of the vehicle. Sometimes also on the sides or on the side mirrors of a vehicle. They are used to indicate the direction to other road users when turning or changing lanes.


Warning light

The four warning lights (turn signals) of a car may only be lit if your car is defective or to warn other drivers about an accident, a traffic jam or a load on the road.
