102. All-terrain vehicle

An all-terrain vehicle (ATV) is a motor vehicle designed to travel over rough or uneven surfaces as well as, in some cases, ordinary roads. ATVs commonly have four wheels, wide tyres and a compact body and are used for recreation, agriculture, forestry or other off-road activities.

Whether an ATV may be used on public roads depends on its vehicle classification, registration, equipment and local traffic laws. Some ATVs are approved for road use, while others are intended exclusively for off-road use.

What is an all-terrain vehicle?

An all-terrain vehicle is a motor vehicle designed to travel over rough or uneven terrain, commonly using four wheels and wide tyres.

Can an ATV be driven on public roads?

It depends on the country and vehicle. An ATV may need to meet specific registration, equipment, insurance and licensing requirements before it can legally use public roads.

Are all ATVs four-wheeled vehicles?

Not necessarily. The term can cover different types of off-road vehicles, although four-wheeled quads are among the most common forms.
