181. Snow chains
Snow chains are traction devices fitted around vehicle tyres to improve grip on roads covered with snow or ice. They are especially useful on steep or mountainous roads where ordinary tyres may not provide sufficient traction.
Snow chains should be fitted according to the vehicle and chain manufacturer's instructions, normally on the driven wheels. They should be removed when they are no longer needed because driving with chains on clear roads can damage the tyres, chains and road surface.

When may chains substitute for winter tyres in Austria?
For qualifying light vehicles during the winter-equipment period, chains on at least two driven wheels may replace winter tyres only when the road is continuously or almost continuously covered with snow or ice.
