138. Throttle
A throttle is a control used to regulate the power produced by an engine or motor. In most cars and trucks, the driver controls the throttle through the accelerator pedal, while motorcycles commonly use a twist grip on the handlebar.
Increasing the throttle generally increases the power available for acceleration, while reducing it decreases the power delivered to the wheels. The exact system differs between combustion-engine, hybrid and electric vehicles.

Does the Belgian Road Code have a special rule for the throttle?
No separate traffic rule specifically defines the throttle. Its safe use forms part of the driver's general responsibility to maintain control of the vehicle.
Must a driver remain in control while accelerating in Belgium?
Yes. Every driver must remain capable of carrying out all necessary manoeuvres and must keep the vehicle under control at all times.
Can you repeatedly rev an idling engine in Belgium?
No. Belgian traffic rules prohibit a driver from repeatedly accelerating an engine while it is running in neutral. Unnecessary engine idling is also prohibited.
