188. Vehicle inspection
A vehicle inspection is an official check to determine whether a vehicle is safe, roadworthy and compliant with applicable technical and environmental requirements. Depending on the country and type of vehicle, inspections may check the brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, emissions, identification and other safety-related components. Inspection rules and intervals vary between countries: some vehicles require regular periodic inspections, while others may also need an inspection after major modifications, an accident, importation or a change of ownership.

How often must a New Zealand car have a warrant of fitness in October 2026?
Under the rules in force in October 2026, most light vehicles first registered from 2000 need an annual WoF after the initial new-vehicle period, while older vehicles may need six-month checks. Changes begin on 1 November 2026.
Are New Zealand WoF inspection intervals changing in November 2026?
Yes. From 1 November 2026, the second WoF for a new light vehicle is due at four years rather than three. Two-year checks for eligible light vehicles aged 4–14 are phased in: vehicles first registered on or after 1 November 2019 qualify from 1 November 2026; those first registered from 1 November 2013 to 31 October 2019 qualify from 1 November 2027. Follow the existing WoF expiry date; the change does not automatically extend it.
